Alexandria's Freedmans Cemetery

Federal troops secured Alexandria as Union territory and former slaves, called contrabands, streamed in hoping for protection. Mortality rates were high and authorities turned a parcel of land into a cemetery in 1864 in which more than 1700 contrabands and freedmen were buried. Forgotten but then rediscovered in 1996, it is now a monument to their courage and has provided family history and closure for their descendants, as this powerful history tells.
